Geek Grrls games of 2009

January 6th 2010 02:41
Meh, most gaming websites do them, so why the heck not eh? There was plenty of gaming goodness to be had in 2009, but some stood head and shoulders above the rest. Here are my geek grrl picks of last year... and wow what a year 2010 is going to be, so let's look back with a fond eye shall we, before the big names in 2010 start to truly flow.

First up there's Assassin's Creed II, sequel to a good game and one that breaks the rule of sequels sucking. Assassin's Creed II took the first game, ramped it up, added more control, better story and then some. If you missed this sprawling wonder, go get it.

Next up, my game of the year, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for the Ps3, there are truly no words for the wonder that is this game. Again it bettered the prequel and that in itself was an awesome game. Naughty Dog did a fantastic job, you should own it.

Flower on the PSN saw a move away from what we gamers expect in gaming. Gone was the formulaic manner in which games are developed and we got to see a colorful, thought provoking wonder.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is another sequel and it has to be said a sweet addition to the CoD universe. It launched with controversy due to a particular level, but that aside, it held some great gaming moments for me last year.

Shadow Complex on XBLA was a wonderful old skool foray into the 2.5D genre. A wonderful game marred only by the fact alleged bigot Orson Scott-Card was involved in its development, i mean who wants to line the pockets of a moron.

Dragon Age: Origin took the RPG to the next level with over 60 hours of gameplay. March sees the release of the first expansion. It's also BioWare which immediately made me coo with delight when it was released.

Batman Arkham Asylum, whilst not the most fantastic game overall, brought the dark knight to consoles in a dark and sardonic manner. The only thing missing for me was Batwoman, but maybe she'll appear in the sequel, now that would be awesome.

And that my friends is that! What were your favorites of last year?

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves thoughts

October 22nd 2009 02:47
I bought Uncharted 2 and finished it in a few days. I just wanted to get on here and gush about what a fantastic game I thought it was (don't worry no spoilers). Without doubt this is my game of the year (sure I know we've still got a few good releases before the years end, but it's doubtful any of them are going to better Uncharted 2 Among Thieves for story, characterization or overall gameplay content).

If you have a PS3 and you don't yet have Uncharted 2, what the hell are you thinking? After the utter disappointment with Halo 3: ODST in which the female character was laughable in her role as 'leader' (cough cough!) Uncharted 2 features two of the coolest female characters in any video game.

Yeah that's a big call to make, but you know what, it's made. Chloe and Elena rock out despite being still aligned as the peripheral love interest for the main male lead. Naught Dog somehow manage to tread the fine line between doing the peripheral female, but make them both so frakkin awesome it doesn't matter.

Maybe the boys club at Bungie and MS should take a trip to Naughty Dog studios and see how it's done properly, so that we don't have another pathetic excuse for a female leader as they did with Dare in Halo: ODST.

Well done Naughty Dog, awesome game, great characters, great story.

Halo 3 ODST female character quandary

September 8th 2009 21:19
Bungie and Microsoft love the Halo franchise, but what both companies seem to be ignoring is that despite the macho imagery within the game itself, some of us female gamers love the Halo franchise also. Prior to Halo ODST being officially shown I had fingers crossed that both MS and Bungie would actually include a female playable character in Halo ODST, but they didn't, the main Rookie character is a guy. Now given the armor clad nature of Halo ODST it has to be asked just how hard it would be to have changed up the voicework a little to include both genders so the player could choose their gender before starting a game? A little extra work yes, but not a huge amount. Bungie and MS seem to be trying to appease the female gamer community by once more including what can only be termed as peripheral story aiding characters, such as Dare, the female commander. Judging from the clips thus far released however, Dare is not treated as a commanding officer, but rather undermined by those she commands. There's an entire thesis on gender politics here, but the upshot of it seems to be that MS and Bungie are being sexist, given the futuristic setting of the game. We can cross fingers that perhaps one of those flashback levels we've heard about will feature Dare as a playable character, but given the latest live action advertising campaign for Halo ODST from MS, it looks like it's going to be one big grunt fest, with not a single female soldier seen in the advert, odd given Halo does feature female combat troops. Looks like whoever was in charge of putting that ad together needs a little slap.

If you're a fan of Firefly or Serenity and you're an Xbox 360 owner you're probably going to implode when you read this. More than one of the crew is set to appear in Halo 3: ODST. Nathan Fillion will be voicing Sgt. Buck in Halo 3: ODST and we've all known this for awhile, but more Firefly crew are popping up. Adam Baldwin is now being credited with the voice of Dutch in Halo 3: ODST. Alan Tudyk is rumored to be voicing Mickey in the game and Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer voices Dare. Quite the sci-fi extravaganza.

Jambo! Safari for Wii and DS!

May 21st 2009 02:10
Jambo Safari is coming to the Wii and DS, color me happy. This is a game I've loved in the arcades for a long time and often wondered why the heck no one was releasing it on home console. I'm just sad it's not getting an Xbo 360 or PS3 release as I rarely use my Wii these days (now there's a sentence I never thought I'd write, for a couple of reasons lol).

Jambo Safari is a Sega title that sees you driving a jeep and lassoing animals on safari to look after them. It's all very cool. Here's hoping it transfers well to Wii and DS.

It's a question, not a suggestion. I've noticed my handheld gaming habits have taken a recent turn and its a turn away from the Nintendo DS toward the iPhone. I used to play the DS all the time, it was definitely used way more than my PSP, but I haven't played it in over a month because the iPhone is sating my handheld gaming.

The App store is so easy to use and there are some really great little games on the iPhone that are superb for pick up and play. I got to wondering whether this is a common trend, or whether other people have also seen this swing in their habits

Killzone 2 quick review for PS3

February 11th 2009 02:46
So Killzone 2 arrived with me last week and I have to say I was a bit "Meh" when it dropped through the door. I rarely play FPS on the PS3 as I always opt to get them on the 360, but I had my duty to Sony so popped that sucker in.

Wow! Holy cow, finally a game on the PS3 that actually looks like it might be using more than half its graphics power, it's astonishing, beautiful. Lighting, textures, modeling, environments, AI... all pretty darn good

As an avid gamer I peruse a few 'favorited' gaming haunts. I mix things up a little with regards to audience and content because then you get to the quirky stuff that not every single site is posting. One of my favorite gaming sites is called "the LG" or Lesbian Gamers.com and it has some terrific exclusive articles and other content not found elsewhere (unless someone naughty copies them - for shame!).

Recently they've put up a few cool articles and some quirky ones as well, including this gem: "Why Playing Zelda Games is Like a Pub Crawl". If you've ever been drunk, or played a Zelda game.. and specifically if you've done both, you'll probably find this most amusing

I mentioned PS3 title Afrika a few months ago and now I've had a chance to play it thanks to import gaming. Afrika arrived with a name change "Hakuna Matata", this was somewhat confusing given the store I ordered it with had it listed as Afrika. Turns out it's the same game, just a different Asian release, so all is well.

Importing Afrika for the PS3 is definitely a worthwhile venture. The game is playable despite all the emails the ingame character receives being in Japanese. The menu sttem is all in English though so the game itself is simple to navigate. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay relaxing - for the most part

The producer of LEGO Batman has a pretty funny Q & A up and he says he'd turn gay for Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet. There's loads of other little tidbits of information too, like a secret female character in the game and why LEGO Cthulhu probably won't get made.

I like interviews where the interviewer doesn't ask the same old boring questions, sometimes it's better to have random fun questions than the same questions you've seen 50 times over every other gaming website. I like this approach
