Fat Princess - feminists angry
July 23rd 2008 04:00
Fat Princess, the name itself has stirred up a few feminist gamers, that's without the overall premise. As a female gamer I can see both sides here, the feminist gamers and the average Joe gamer who couldn't give a crap about the overarching implications something like this has on hearts and minds.
On the one hand you've got the premise of the obese and utterly useless female character, which is in itself annoying and yeah feminists, you go girls because it is frakkin annoying that time after time female in game characterizations are put in the position of useless piece of crap whilst the 'men' go around trying to rescue your useless - and in this case - fat ass.
On the average Joe gamer side though, this looks kind of fun and at least it's something different style wise. Sure it would be great if it didn't involve fat princesses, it's like women in games are either super svelte and impossible / unobtainable body types or they're fat and useless (remember that freakin Japanese game where the player had to lose weight so she could get the all important boyfriend?! Give me a frakkin break!!).
Seriously, can game developers sit down at the beginning of a games development and actually think about all the many socio political implications in game stuff is going to stir up? Well they can probably think about more than they do it seems.
